Wet year helps garden

I've had the best tomato year I've had in 7 years although I only had 14 plants out. They have produced heavily and still loaded. And never lost a plant this year.

I've started digging sweet potatoes. Have dug 5 hills. Had 16 pounds under one plant. Several large tubers under some of the plants. The plants that I started from slips have out produced the plants I purchased from a local nursery as slips. And those were overall planted earlier. The ones I started were in a starter mix and most had good root systems when I removed them and transplanted them. The ones from the nursery were started in water and didn't have as extensive of a root system. It took them longer to really take off. And the tubers are smaller. I have dug one hill of the white sweet taters. There was lots of them but they were on the small side. Will know more after I've dug more but looks like it could be my best sweet potato year ever.

Also had a very good garlic year.

Dawn I posted it on the rain thread of Scott's. With the 1.50 of last weekend I'm now at 18.60 inches for the year. Some around especially in the Keyes and Boise City areas have went over 20 inches. Still no subsoil moisture but the grass never did go totally 100% brown this summer even during the heat. Amazing what real rain water does for things.
Carol I travel to west central OK every weekend I'm not on call. So don't get online a lot. Do drop by the site once a week or so just to take a peek.

Jay, Now that Carol and I are nagging you and asking questions, don't you feel like you've come back home? (grin)

That is an an impressive amount of rainfall. I don't remember you ever having more than 15" in any year since we met you here on GW. I wonder if y'all ever have good subsoil moisture in any given year? It would seem like there's never enough rain, even in a "wet" year (your definition of a wet year is a lot drier than mine) for your subsoil to recover from all the dry years.

I hope that Leedey had good rainfall this year as well.

I haven't dug sweet potatoes yet, but we did have a good garlic year. I grew garlic in two places---one was a small raised bed next to the potting shed that has average soil and didn't get any irrigation. The garlic there produced a huge harvest of tiny bulbs. If I ever grow garlic there again, I need to put a drip irrigation line on that bed to keep it irrigated. In the big garden where I grew garlic as companion plants for other veggies in better soil and with irrigation, the garlic produced huge bulbs.
