Okay, I did find out it's called a stink bug. Never saw so many at once before. Reading up on them, I learned that they prefer to feed on fruit trees. Now I am not aware of any fruit trees in my suburban neighborhood - we have scads of maples and box elders.

More specifically, it's the Brown Marmorated Stinkbug.

They're trying to get in your house to hibernate.

And they can damage up to 400 different kinds of plants. They're nasty agricultural & garden pests in the eastern US. Becoming so in the west.

My sisters live in Orange cnty N.Y. and they have been batteling these for the past few years,to say they hate them would be an understatement.
Between those and the deer eating their plants,they are about to throw in the towel.

Just another one of those gifts from Asia, introduced into our agricultural system. It is not a native plant pest, and those introduced species usually cause more dollar damage, since they don't have the predator checks and balances native species do. Other posters are correct, you will find them everywhere, including your house.........they aren't just around fruit trees. If you mash one or suck one up in a vacuum, you'll understand why they are called stink bugs.

I don't interfere with them except if I find one inside, then I scoop it up on a piece of paper and escort it outside.
