Are you actually having a problem with leafcutter ants? But they are the most interesting animal in Texas!!!!

When searching for insects in Texas, always start with aggieland. (Toss TAMU in with your search terms.)

I also live in south central Texas and thought my Knockout roses were losing leaves due to the drought. Then I discovered those horrible ants were stealing all of the leaves. I do not know if the roses will survive.

I sprinkled Amdro Ant Block around the mound and along a landscape timber the ants were using for a trail. The ants assigned one ant the job of clearing the pathway by picking up one granule of ant block at a time and dropping it off the side of the timber. I don't know if the ant block will do the job.

I got frustrated and poured a liquid seven mixture down the entrance to the mound. I don't see ants coming out of that mound...they probably just moved their entry to a new location. If you find anything else that helps, please post.

These ants, "Atta texana", apparently only eat a fungus that is grown on the bits of leaf they collect, so baits, such as Amdro, will not be effective. "Because leaf cutting ants only eat the fungus they cultivate, they do not respond well to most conventional ant baits, including sugar- or oil-based baits."
