Looks like a red sealing wax palm! Very beautiful and very sensitive to cold. In the US, it only grows in Greenhouses, Hawaii, and the mildest parts of Southern Florida.

Thanks for the ID...They sure are striking Palms, I didn't see too many there. Another interesting palm I saw there was the Fishtail Palm. Very interesting appearance.

Yes, they're Cyrtostachys renda, quite commonly used as street plantings in the tropics. But being a clumping palm the smaller suckers need to be trimmed off to show off the larger red trunks. That could be why you didn't notice so many, they may not have all been trimmed sufficiently.

Thanks for the information. I saw some in yards, but on the street the bottle palm was very common, like this one here...

the category of some of the most overly used plants includes foreign materials like caesalpinia pulcherrima, ficus benjamina, euphorbia milli, cycas revoluta, phoenix roebelenii, dypsis lutescens, zamia maritima, roystonea regia, wodyetia bifurcata, araucaria heterophylla, agave angustifolia and dypsis decaryi.
some native pplants include osmoxylon lineare, licuala grandis, carmona retusa, adonidia merrilii and its gold form, areca catechu, caryota mitis, podocarpus costalis, asplenium nidus, asplenium musifolium and dracaena multiflora.

most plants have something in common and can take torrential rain, drought and the extremes even neglected in the country.

Well, to me these look pretty cool, common or not, being from the northeastern U.S. It's all exotic to me.

if you can grow kerriodoxa elegans, silver joey palm and the more exotic stuff in the ground year round with some wind barrier, you may change your mind. (and with a peace of mind with all that money invested)
i can name a few others.
most medinilla species, euanthe sanderiana, PHEMPIS ACIDULA, most tillandsia species, miniature agave, some pachypodium, most cycads, amorphophallus, most staghorn ferns, most rare and collectible sansevieria d foliage anthurium...

Plants are definitely a matter of personal taste. I often see people rave over certain plants that I think are very 'ordinary'. And then some people are very "ho hum" about some of my favourites. I guess it gives most plants a bit of a chance.
