I've noticed the same phenomenon everywhere I've ever lived. I've never been able to find out the reason for it, and have just told myself that 'they know something that I don't'. Kind of disturbing, when you think of it. ;-)

Do you think that rainfall is a contributing factor in your location?

I live in san diego, and there has been no rain since about May... I sometimes wonder if it has to do with vibrations. No earthquakes have ever followed their death marches, and its not about mating. I'm just plain stumped on this. I have even just recently reduced our sprinklers to once every three days, so its not that the ground gets to wet. also, it never happens anyplace around my house except onto the back patio, off of my backyard lawn. never the front porch, or the sidewalks or flower beds. beats the heck out of me.

I have the same question too. I live in Virginia and hundreds of earthworms migrate from my lawn to the sidewalk. This has been going on for the last two weeks. I have not placed any chemicals at all in my yard. Now.... what's really weird about this phenomenon is that I live in a subdivision and have neighbors all around me. Guess what? I'm the only one with this problem. I've checked everybody elses sidewalk and they are clear. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person with this problem. Does anyone know, please? I'm very curious to find out why this is happening. Thanks.

Hmmmm. I don't know any worm wranglers right off the top of my head.

Some species come to the surface to mate. All will surface if the soil is saturated and they can't get enough oxygen. If the hardscaping or topography influences water run off and/or drainage in certain areas, that could be part of the mystery. That is probably the reason I find them in my front sidewalk and driveway, now that I think about it. It doesn't take much to saturate our clayey soil.

This is happening in our area right now. While walking my dog around 530am ALL of the worms are trying to cross the street! Mostly 1 street in particular AND mostly where the street lights shine on the cement road. I dont see it on the black top roads. I cant help but to toss as many as I can back into the grass - even tho they are covered on road dirt & dust.
