Something routing around in our yard

We have tons of holes in our yard and mulch and inch or two across, one to two inches deep. It looks like a pig has been routing around in the grass. We do have a ground hog that lives in the vacant lot next door, and we do have Japanese Beetles in the summer. Could that be the cause?

Could be birds or squirrels.

Squirrels, skunks, raccoons, etc. rooting for the beetle larva, grubs, or burying something. I have not ever seen birds dig holes as described although wild turkeys will excavate an area fairly quickly.

pix would really help ...

i found such in spots where the grass died this summer.. that means grubs ... and that something was harvesting them ...

but the depth confuses me ...

but w/o a pic.. all we can do is list the usual suspects.. as those above did ...

the simple solution for next year.. is to treat your lawn for grubs ...

you could also go turn some soil in the area .. and see what you find.. up to you whether you will try the taste test.. lol ... just think of it as buggal protein .... new word there.. lol ...
