Damage already done

Well.I finally put in a door on the g/house and there is more damage, both my C.cerifera have complete spear pull,my agaves look like mush but are still solid in the middle,(I think they are to wet) 4 of my trachys have spear pull, 2-(nainital and fortxwag)partial, leaf next to spear only and 2 complete spear pull, both fortxwags and 2 cordylines are toast up the middle-more later(not palms,I hope)These palms received .72"rain and 18F in the next day or two after, make sure you keep those crowns dry and cut back on water as I have had to learn the hard way!

With the # of succulents approx 40ish and palms, etc, approx 25-30 its not that surprising that there are a few already in trouble but I was a little chicken (as we were having temps in the 70s)to begin letting them dry out so about 3 weeks ago I did some deep root treatmants with potassium to try and get some deep moisture available to them,I think this and some heavy rain about a week ago made for to wet of soil when teens arrived,i believe this is the case because I saw some other spike plants around here(planted)that are fine.I have the winter protection over all the trachys and they are healthy so we shall see if they can come back, not the way I wanted to go into winter though,I will post some pics tomorrow, hopefully. There is some good news though,E.tubiflora,mazari,O.engelmanni,Y,gloriosa,fishook barrel,Y.rostrata,O.imbracata,Y.aloifolia and many more all look great-also,my trachys from last year look awesome and are still growing!I wonder if I should remove the mushy leaves off the agaves and treat with fungicide, probably.
Mike, thanks for the kind offer!I have back ups and other ideas if some spots open up,one of the mushy ones is a tequila agave, supposedly hardy to 0F,it does have a baby coming up off to the side,so one way or another it will make it,I am surprised to see the parryii in trouble already but I think our wet spring and summer has left these with to much deep moisture!

The agave must have had too much moisture in the root-zone because they are very cold tolerant plants. I keep mine in pots outside but under an awning during the cold season to keep them dry.

Here are some pics of agaves and a few palms with spear pull,I think the palms will come back as they all look really good!only 2(trachys)have total spear pull, the other 2 are partial, just the leaves next to the spear. The 2 C.cerifera are total spear pull but leaves are still looking good,I may need to baby these more than I was planning to get some recovery this winter. My big question now is,do I cut the mushy leaves off the agaves so it does not spread to the core?the cores still look solid!

    Nainital-partial

    fortxwag-total spear pull

Healthy trachys planted before last winter, still growing!

Trachy planted this year, spear did not pull on this are my waggies,it seems like the trachys with tighter crowns did not have a problem!

just leave the agaves. The rotting will not spread but to areas that were damaged. The rotting will stop where it meets healthy parts. One of my agave Desmettiana Variegata became mushy one day (i'm not really sure what damaged it though, since we haven't had frost yet, and it was the only one of 6 that had damage). The center was mushy but it quickly grew out of it. I'm thinking it could have been damage from slugs or snails.

Cali369-Thanks for the advice, they do look like they are all fine, except for the leaves, hehe.I will keep a close watch on the spears to see if there is movement.I should be able to get them dried out before real cold hits and I guess I will change my winter plan to keep them above 0F and keep them above the teens for 4-6weeks or until they show signs of growing out of this, here are some more pics-1st is west side,S.louisiana and Nainital in larger small g/h Waggie is in tiny/mini g/house
2nd is C.cerifera with complete spear pull 3rd is healthy S.louisiana that is in large g/h with Nainital

I pulled some rotted leaves out of treated(copper based fungicide)D.indivisa,or commonly sold as spike plant and discovered some green right in the center of the inner core, this one may pull through yet.Cordyline is still mushy,I will operate tomorrow-hope you can see the green spear core in this pic-

Jim, That is awful news. I had no idea your temps got so low already, last time i heard you were basking in the 70's!

I won't ask you how your castor oil plants are doing. Mine are still growing. Although it looks like we could have some sub zero temps this weekend which could finish them off!

Jimhardy, sorry to hear of your problems with the palms. I know you put much effort and money into them. It is a constant battle in the "zombie zones" of 5 or 6. Thank god for basjoo! I am trying again with three palms outdoors. Arctictropical seems to have luck in zone 4 though.

Thanks guys!T-head I posted a pic of castors on e.p.s.I think it was a low temps so far title, anyway the castors were blown apart by 60+mph winds before 18F even got them the same night!Heres an action shot-LOL of castors

Jim, i remember seeing these now. Are you planning to grow some next year? i just bought ricin seeds for next year, i am trying a few new var's. My new zealand purple got very big this but does not look as exotic as the zanzi palm var which gets almost as wide as it does tall! If my african communis plants seed as i hope they will i will post you some if you want?

Yes T-head that would be great!I am planning on growing more next year,I ordered 100 seeds of the same as these(green variety)I'm also trying gunera(sp) and another large leaf plant similar to these(forgot the name)next year will be spectacular with the plants that overwinter and the 5-6'+ bananas I will start with next year, can't wait!

Jim, its good to start planning next year with all this doom and gloom weather. I think you probably have ordered gunnera manicata, they have naturalised in parts of the UK. I have one that i need to move on as they are way to big for my garden, i only wish i had the space.

T-head,I ordered 1 Tetrapanex papyriferus plant(growing inside now)5 seeds of same and 100 seeds Gunnera tinctoria as always off e-bay!

Jim, I was not familiar with g.tinctoria so i googled it and it looks like a smaller version of manicata which maybe a better option for a small-medium size garden like mine. I have never seen one for sale here.

Tetrapanex papyriferus can also be a beast and you need a fair bit of space, to be honest i prefer castor oil plants which give a similar look but slightly more manageable.

Me likes the monsters, the bigger the better!

So the D.indivisa and cordyline were cut back to the ground today,if they are going to make it,they will need to send up shoots from the roots, the fortxwag was drooping so I dug it up to bring inside,I cut it almost all the way to the soil line befor I found any green, probably a goner, also the nainital spear did pull along with the second of the three fortxwags but the leaves still look healthy at this point and they have been treated so now I wait. One thing I noticed when I dug up the fortxwag is that the soil is still to wet which may cause problems for some of the others down the road,on the + side the agaves looksolid still in the center so they may recover and at this point everything else looks really good considering, esp the washys,I would be very happy to see them come March!

Me wishes i had more space to grow monsters!

I hear ya T-head and I wish I had a latisectus or martianus the size of the ones you have! You have got a great garden!Cheers-
