Winter protection/night

So here are some pics of the protection at night,it is 12F at 11:20pm,some mini g/h's are still in the high teens but a few are 12-13F so I figured better to not risk it,also better to try it now because we may see below zero weather next week with snow already in place, looks like we are headed into some rough winter weather.I hope you enjoy the pics and I wish you could see this in person cuz it looks really cool!but I guess we have all seen x-mas lights, just maybe not like this!I had no idea it would be this bright, now I will see if it keeps them warm enough.

That looks really cool at night/

I'm facing the same kind of temps right now, I hope that the palms I'm trying outside do ok. I killed my nicest butia by overheating it already ,and it's not even winter yet. :'(

lol thats cool looking. You should put a christmas tree out there with lights too :)

Thanks,I know what you mean about overheating!the first test I did on my washys it went up to 111F with 13 bulbs,I cut it down to 3 and it stays 30F+ over outside temp, perfect and if I do need more heat I can just pop the tops off and screw in another bulb or two but this should work down to -10F.
Mike,it sure would be nice to have a tree I don't need to heat-LOL,maybe my Sequoia

Jim that is comical! LOL! I can imagine some of those tacky blow up Santa Clauses and snowmen along side everything with Christmas music being blasted over some loud speakers. We all just need to move to Florida!

I hear ya!-LOL It looks like a space station on Pluto at x-mas time! I'm not moving to Florida,I like the challenge, next spring/summer will make it all worth while

God bless you guys.If I had to to all that to have palms-I guess I wouldn't have them.

Well, I think God has already blessed these people! I think it was Ben Franklin that once said- "show me a satisfied man and I'll show you a loser everytime". It's the challenges that keep us all going! I think that's what happens to too many people when they retire. No more challenges. Looks nice Jim!

Maybe a nativity scene with some hay bales for the season would be nice.

After having a horrific nightmare last night where my 2 windmill's had spear pull(my dream actually tortured me and I physically pulled them out), I went out and checked on them today. We have had a couple nights here in the mid single digits and much to my relief they were both still warm and dry with not so much as the slightest tip burn. All I did was mulch heavily, tie the fronds up, wrap rope light around the base up to the spear and then wrap the whole plant in several layers of burlap and mulch some more around that, when it is extremely cold/windy or a chance of precip I throw a tarp over them.
For you nut's out there in the mid-west, let's all hope that winter is over quickly this year...unlike last.

    Jim,
I admire your dedication! I'm in LI, NY and was thinking that its getting cold over here but looking at your temps, Im still in the tropics! lol
I just moved my King Sago into the garage. It decided to flush toward the end of the summer or else it would still be out. Since the new flush isn't hardened yet, they were turning color.
I also have a B. Yatay, B. Capitata still outside and have 1 Windill in the ground this will be the 3rd winter and another in the ground going on the 2nd winter.
These plants are stronger than I thought.

But you got some real cold out there!!!

Lakers glad your trachys o.k.I already had 2 C.cerifera and 3 trachys with spear pull, nothing has actually croaked just yet and now everything is portected,so maybe I will see some recovery over winter, tough odds though. One thing that is nice so far is we are seeing alot more sun and my indoor palms are thriving,it also allows the palms outside to warm up in their g/h's to the 60s and 70s-
Chippy I hope you get some warmth and sun so that new flush is not lost!If you could bring your sago into some indoor sunlight for a few weeks that might do it.

Heck I was looking north and thought I was seeing the northern lights and it was just you turning your greenhouse lights on!!LOL
    Looks real good!!!!
    What does your neighbors think?
Tell them it keeps the boogie man away!!!!
