I don't live in the Northeast, so I can't suggest a particular shrub, but if it were my property I would plant a variety of berry-producing native shrubs. Native shrub borders make excellent wildlife habitats. Just remember, you'll have to mow a swath of your meadow in front of the shrubs prior to any control burns.

Or, you could forget the shrubs and leave several feet or more of lawn on your side of the property line. This will allow you to maintain your meadow from both sides, so as not to have to tread on your neighbors lawn to clear out leaves and weeds that might collect there. If you feel it necessary, put some stakes on the property line to guide the lawn guys at the beginning of the season. After that, it shouldn't be a problem. The added advantage of going this route is that depending on the sun's orientation, you'll not shade out a portion of your meadow with shrubs.

Here in the Midwest I love, American Highbush Cranberry, Elderberry, Arrowwood, Nannyberry, Black Chokeberry, Shrubby St John's Wort and Ninebark.

I don't know how big you want them to be but there are several species of native hollies that look nice and are evergreen to semi-evergreen.

Thank you so much. I planted nannyberry, chokeberry, and some red twig dogwood. I plan on pulling out some young elderberry and arrowwood seedlings that are sprouting up in my woods. It looks great.
