deer ate leaves

I got up this morning and half of my Plumeria leaves were eaten. I saw the deer last night eating my roses and shooed it away never thinking that it would eat my Plumeria. She ate half of the 2 leaves that were getting big.and also ate the tips of some of the claws. I thought the white sap that comes out stings. Now what do I do, do I leave them out of the sun for awhile. I'm sure they are stressed, they haven't done much in the last 2 weeks. I think I fertilized too soon. Are they doomed before they even start. The poor things have gone through so much. Tried to get a picture on site but don't know how.

Thanks again for everyones help

What you might consider is getting some 2 x 4s and making a box that goes over your plants. Cover it with a clear plastic drop cloth (stapled to the wood)and then in the evening set it over your plumies. This will keep your plants warmer in the evening, lengthen your growing time, and hopefully thwart the deer. Bill

OOOhhhhh....Nice idea Bill, I like that! We have a lot of deer in our area, we live right across from protected woods, but I've never (knock on wood) had them eat my plummies. I recently had to dig up an azalia that I planted and put in right next to the house because the were certainly having a hay day with it.

Oh no! I didn't want to hear that! My wife and I were commenting that the daylilies should be blooming soon. We went out the next day and ALL the buds had been eaten off. I sure hope they don't touch the plumerias.

I donÂt have deer, but I do have rabbits in my area. What I have done is scatter dried chilies around the yard to keep the bunnies away. So far nothing has been eaten.

That's a good idea Bill. That way I also don't have to worry whether I should bring it in the house or not, because the temperature drops at night and I never know if it's going to be toooo cold. Those dar deer eat everything. My daylilies are gone alson, impatients, roses, carnations mums. They even went on my deck and ate my roses which is really kind of enclosed. They sure are cute though. I didn't mind sharing my fruit with them but flowers NIX! My husband foun this spray for rabbits and deer, it's made with rotten eggs it's called Liquid Fence. It smells sooo bad until it drys but it works. But I really didn't think they would eat my Plumeria.

I've had terrible deer problems (and other warm blooded animals) this season. They eat almost everything and what they don't eat they trample. I was given a recipe that works great. I tried all the commercial products and they didn't help. This is also egg based and not only keeps the deer away but the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks and racoons stay away too. So do I for the first few hours after spraying the stinky stuff! lol You mix a few cloves of crushed garlic, 1/4 cup veg oil and 3 eggs into a gallon of water. Cover the jar and let it sit in the sun for a few days then strain it into a spray bottle and treat the plants. It seems to work for about 10 days if there's no heavy rain.

I remember reading that when they plant young pine trees, they spray them with egg whites to keep the deer from eating them.

hello, all: when you spray with egg mixture or the egg white, do you not get alot of flies?

You can check out this link. There is an egg receipe that sounds like it works.

Here is a link that might be useful: Deter Deer Receipe

I've never noticed any flies near the plants after I spray but they do buzz around the containers of the mixture.

Strange weather in our area is causing a lot of wildlife to come in looking for food. Lack of water = lack of food to eat. I feel terrible for them and always leave them SOMETHING to munch on. Others say don't do this but I cannot bear to see a skinny fawn and doe both with ribs showing standing with necks stretched trying to get a bite to eat from my yard. :,(

Tweedbunny, I love deer also. They are the plumeria of the animal world. (He He) We used to have them roam through our back yard in PA. They are so graceful and beautiful. I would feed them too.

Thanks for all your deer deterrent ideas. I'll share mine. I have a hedge of hibiscus which I protect from deer by grating a couple bars of Ivory soap every 10 days or so. I walk out with my plate of grated Ivory soap (looks like a pile of grated parmesan cheese) and I sprinkle it all over my hibiscus plants. They now have grown to about 5 feet. The only time this method has failed me -- is when I have been traveling and unable to keep up the routine. Hope it works for some of you.

Shoot the deer and eat it.
