Sorry to hear about the difficulties. Were the leaves full sized? Usually after you have several well formed, full sized leaves you will have roots.

If the bottoms are now soft I would cut the soft part off, let it callus over, and try to re-root them... hopefully the cuttings are long enough to allow this?

There is stored energy in the cutting, so that is how it is able to push out the leaves and I admit it can be very deceiving... after all the plant is in fact growing before your eyes. I've seen stories on the forum recently of people buying plants at nurseries that were fully leafed out, only to find that they had no roots when the plant got knocked over or they tried to repot it.

If you're using a clear plastic water bottle for rooting you'll be able to see the roots. I water once, after initially placing the cutting in the bottle, and don't water again until I see roots. Otherwise there is a potential of rot... since the cutting has no roots it has no use for water.

Of course you can do all that and stuff can still go wrong :( Once the bottom turns soggy, you'll have to do some trimming otherwise the rot will just keep moving upward. The good news is your cuttings look large enough to where you'll still be OK if you have to do some cutting. Good luck!
