If you'll Google 'rose propagation cuttings', the very first result will answer your question and tell you all about how to do it (if your Google works like mine).

Somethings, it is about the only and certainly the best way for cuttings of certain plants.

Grapes comes to mind. Cuttings of grape vine in dormant state will root amazingly fast and almost always 100%. I used to start several dozen every winter for friends. Rooting growing cuttings is much less certain.

I've heard one experienced guy say that rose cuttings and rooting them are just different depending on time of year, but you can do it year round. A time when the plant is growing well, is the easier time, but when the plant is going into dormancy or even a cutting from a winter-time rose would be fine also. One difference is the amount of time you'll have to wait for rooting to occur, as well as how much time and effort you need to expend to keep it alive for that long.

In my case, I took several cuttings from my rose bushes in late winter, before they had any leaves. I put those in water and not only are they growing their leaves now but some have taken root and will be transferred to soil media soon.

Thanks! I got more information then expected. There is a grape vine in my neighborhood producing fruit even though it's neglected. I will be doing exactly what you suggested.

yugoslava- easiest method for grapes if cut about 20-30 cm long 8-10 mm diameter from dormant canes, nest bottom ends in damp sphagnum, wrap in poly film and place in vegetable drawer of refrigerator till roots form, then plant under mist or cover.
