Inquire locally. First question is why the other ones are so far away. Unsuitable environmental conditions, including economic ones like price of land or other costs? Maybe someone at local Extension office has insights. Also try to make it to farmer's market(s) and see if there is anyone bringing blueberries, see what they have to say about how it has gone for them.

Good advise, although 35 miles in Texas is considered very local. My step daughter almost has to go that far to get a gallon of milk. Gotta remember how large that state is. LOL.

Always connect with your state extension office when you start up or consider starting up an ag enterprise. Ours has economic specialists as well as those who deal with the soil or growing aspects of an operation. They can also assist you with things like applying for agricultural tax deferments on your land, pesticide certifications, and networking with other fruit growers.

Again, always scope out the local farmer's markets, whether you would like to grow food crops or ornamentals, or jellies or even crafts. Your only competition isn't going to be the boxes, or the independent nurseries, there is a whole fan club of markets consumers who live for saturdays and markets. Where else can you spend a whole morning for free and get hot coffee and donuts and people watch?

You would not even begin to believe the number of farms who have a g'house or two to take advantage of free gas from their oil wells, and they may not produce big or last long until their inventories are depleted, but believe me they'll be there in force for the beginning of the season when the bulk of the plants sell. It's called cash flow before the veggies are ready.
