My question is why would you want to do that? We usually graft a preferred species on a root stock with beneficial characteristics. Silver Maple roots are among the most obnoxious in the urban and suburban forest.

Reasons why I want to graft sugar maple onto silver maple:

* Get a tree that is more tolerant of wet areas.
* Get a sugar maple that is faster growing.
