help with christmas gift a container grown tree

please help me

for christmas i received a red japaneese spreading maple tree, container grown with no instructions. the container is 18 inches in diameter and 12 inches deep, the tree is 24 inches tall and about 3 feet wide.

do i plant it now or wait until spring

if i wait for spring how do i store until spring
