propagating blueberries

I live at 3,800 feet elevation in Idaho with its hot, dry summers but I've managed to get a couple of highbush blueberries going by acidifying my light, neutral soil with sulphur and peat moss. They've been in the garden for over a year and are doing well. I tried to start some cuttings off green shoots. After 6 weeks, all I have left is one green shoot but the leaves have dropped off (I left 2 leaves on each cutting and I put them in 50% sand/50% peat). I also placed the cuttings in deep shade inside a wire "cage" that formed a roomy frame for a sheet of thick, clear plastic. Then I misted the inside about 4 times a day. I did not use any rooting hormone.

Any ideas on why this failed?

Also, might this one remainiing leafless shoot yet survive and root, or am I dreaming?
