I get that in my patch also as it is located by the coast.
Usually when its gloomy, moist/fog, and low temps it appears like yours. I was told if you dont get rid of it you will also have mites, mealy bugs, ants that will appear. I use Fungicide on the plant for a week or 2 that usually clears it up. I was also told poor circulation with damp cool temps cause this condition also.

I think a Fungicide application will work. I sometimes get that on some tips that are low branches and/or get dropped leaves, blooms, etc. caught on it.

I am thinking that I have used Neem oil or maybe that 3 in 1 stuff as well.

It looks like sooty mold, which commonly grows on the excrement (honeydew) of aphids, scale, or mealybug.

The Bayer 3-In-1 Insect, Disease & Mite Control (not to be confused with the other 3 in 1 product that contains fertilizer) has a systemic insecticide and a systemic fungicide, as well as a miticide, so you should find it very helpful in combating fungal infections and sucking insects.

mahalo for all the great advice....is it too late in the season for Bayer 3N1? I have that stuff in the blue bottle you mix and pour on soil for the bugs....does wiping off w/alcohol do any thing at all? roxanne

Hey Rox, i get it on my Aztec Gold as well....a couple tips or plants have it, others (nearby) are perfect......AG can be a little fickle up here.

I spray my plants for fungus or powdery mildew, with hydrogen peroxide. I also put it in the water when I am rooting cuttings. Barbra

I have had this on a few of mine as well and I have used the Bayer 3 in 1 and it has worked well..

Thanks Al for the correct name of this nasty sooty mold. I knew it was a fungus ( mold ) of some sort... Thanks again!!

Roxanne- as I was reading this post yesterday and inspected the ones I have that are rooting- I noticed the exact same problem on one of mine but not as much as I saw on yours.
Laura- when you used the Bayer spray, how much and how often did you use it for ? ;-)
