Is that a counter-top microwave placed in a cubby under the island, or is it a built-in drawer? If regular type, is it inconvenient to access or work the controls?

We've had a regular microwave cubby in this spot for 20 years without incidence and have always loved it! Older children can easily use it, but never leave a hot item unattended if there is a toddler in the house! I know of a two year old that opened the door when his mom was distracted and spilled hot water down his belly. It was very painful and caused serious burns requiring a trip to the ER and weeks of care, etc. It was easy to re-adapt a new microwave in the space when the first one died! Our regular microwave opens out to the side. This is a great location for wheelchair clients,too!

We have a microwave built in like this and are very pleased with it. We press a button and the door slides out or we can pull on the handle and it will roll out. It is easy to clean, which was a concern of ours.

Sharp is the only manufacturer of the "drawer" type microwave. Wolf and subzero have them but they are made by Sharp. One thing to consider is if the magnatron goes out the cost to replace is is more than buying a brand new counter top type that you could have your cabinet maker install. I looked at the drawer type yesterday and cleaning the top of the inside of the unit would be a pain if someone didn't cover what they were heating

Is it awkward to have a countertop model installed that low (working the controls?)

I have one like that, it's great. The only problem is when my toddler decides to play with the buttons! I think I will do this in my new house-it will be easy to replace if the microwave dies.

where is the stove and oven? Or is this just a partial view of the kitchen?

I had the doors and drawer fronts of my maple cabinets professionally lacquered and matched the trim with oil based paint. They look like new cabinets. The lacquer job wasn't that expensive.
