Mid-May, d? Do you have any seed (weed or otherwise) germinating anywhere right now?

I appreciate your concern about leaving the soil exposed but doubt that you can get more than a slight "greening" on your slope before mid-May - no matter what you decide to plant.

If you are concerned about erosion and the area is tiny, you could put down burlap. Or, if there are lots of rocks around, use them as "stone mulch." I've also stacked them 3 then 2 then 1 to make a small "retaining walls" and that has done quite a bit to create terracing.

You could also think about putting in some of your really cold hardy annual veggies - mustard comes to mind. Broad cast and then turn under wherever you wish to plant other crops later. I really question whether it will have grown beyond a very tiny size in zone 4 (which is what I'm imaging for you) by mid-May. However, many vegetables will not grow to any size until mid-June, or later. Mustard would be well established by then and of benefit to your soil, compost pile, or table.

Hi Steve, There were some really weedy flowers of some sort that I have dug up since they are very 'rooty' & I think they will take over. I like the mustard idea, now i just have to find some. Thanks,d
