also, it blooms just a few flowers in late august early september. Blooms always appear at very tips of branches, generally only one bloom to branch. its smell is faint, it was cut almost completley down a few years ago, and has grown back right up to its old height. The few leaves it does get have the ridged edges, like someone took zigzag scissors and trimmed them. Sorry i forgot to put this in the first part, i was preoccupied trying to get my picture small enough, for some reason it came out huge.

Its to difficult to tell anything from the photo you posted. Close ups in good lighting would help. With that said, your rose could possible be and old wild variety or even old root stock. I tend to think more in the line of a wild variety because these usually have the leaves you mentioned, are quite thorny and have thinner canes that arch or sprawl more.

Sounds like the rose commonly used as rootstock, Dr. Huey, which is a once-blooming (usually in the spring, but rebloom can occur) climber. See photos at the link below. Your photo doesn't help much, sorry, photos of the blooms and close-ups of the leaves and stems would be better (when you get them).
