Pink shrub rose ID

This is the bulldozed rose, again. Only pic I'm lacking now is fully open bloom - will be added to page later today or early tomorrow. Canes at ground level are huge, ankle size, gray cracked bark like a tree. I found it in the trash, cut it back to 1 ft, planted it, and it grew! Click on thumbnails to enlarge.

Friend who lives near the house where it was from says it was a big shrub rose, 6-7 ft tall. Canes are reddish so far. Blooming on new growth. Buds are at ends of canes, usually in groups of 3.

Numerous bright red thorns, 2" apart, usually less.

Leaf clusters have small hooked thorns on the back on the middle stem thingy, whatever it's called. Sometimes a few, sometimes all the way along it.

On the older, bigger leaf clusters, the leaf at the end of the cluster is quite round imo. Sorry, no good pic of that. Leaves are leathery.

Petals roll back at ends. Allergy season for me, and I can't smell the bloom that's opening.

Pics as clear as I could make them with the dratted cheap camera. Anybody got a clue, or a group of clues? Class, even?

Full bloom is about 4" across.

Total shot in the dark here but the open bloom looks like Mrs. B. R. Cant. I had and loved this rose but it wasn't happy with our cold winters so I gave it to my sis in Charleston, SC. It thrives on neglect and at last report was bigger than a VW bug and covered in blooms.

Many thanks, rosyjennifer! I think you are probably right.

At least, I'll go with Mrs. B. R. Cant unless I learn differently. It's a gorgeous rose, and I can't believe it's coming back to life so strongly. Must have 20 buds on it, sending up shoots all over those big ancient canes.

You said your nose wasn't at its peak, so you couldn't detect or ID fragrance. But Mrs. B. R. Cant has a very unusual, cool fragrance to my nose. Not heavy and sweet or sharp and spicy but cool and penetrating. Sounds strange, but it's true. Sometimes it smelled like cherry Kool-aid to me. If you smell Kool-aid, you are one step closer to an ID. : )

Since your rose is very hardy and tough chances are there are other bushes elsewhere that have survived the same way your rose has. You may want to look at Old Garden Rose retail websites like The Antique Rose Emporium or Vintage Gardens for pics of your rose.

As the rose re-establishes itself, you may want to root cuttings and pass them along to keep it going.
