I'm no expert, but it looks like a rugosa to me. It looks a lot like Hansa (very common) but Hansa is quite fragrant. How big is the bloom? How about Grootendorst?

grootendorst looks like a good possibility..is it fragrant? what i have isn't.my blossoms are only about an inch in diameter, possibly a bit larger..i saw a hansa at a garden center last week and the blooms were very large..i sort of ruled it out, but now that i know hansa is fragrant, i can definately rule it out. donna

I'm sure I've seen a Grootendorst "in the leaf" but I don't actually remember, so I'm going off the info at HMF. Says the blooms are "small" and the fragrance is "mild," which often means no fragrance in practice.

Grootendorst has serrated petals, kind of like a carnation and is very, very thorny.

I just saw Grootendorst in bloom at a rose garden in Ohio. It has no scent and gets about 5' or 6' tall in USDA hardiness zone 6. If the leaves look the slightest bit ridged along the leaf veins & also even a little bit "leathery" I very strongly suspect that's what you've got. The proof will be what collinw mentions. The petal edges will be "serrated" ("toothed", like a saw), like a carnation's petals. Even if it isn't Grootendorst, if the leaves are at all ridged along the veings (the veins may be the valleys rather than the ridges), you have a hybrid of Rosa rugosa.
