Wintering Part 2

Well here is my update.

All plants were doing great! Then it happened.... I noticed those little ^%*&$&$*^% buggers Aphids found their way in..... Needless to say all plants seemed doomed, even after the hybrid was still wanting to produce peppers. No where did I find ladybugs. I even tried and had fun with a shop vac and shop-vaced tons of those buggers.

Next to no leaves were on any plant, the Tabasco had NONE.

Well anyway. After all that hell.... The Tabscos are springing back to life with tons of new leaves forming! The Hybrid is doing much of the same with tons of new leaves.

However.... The Cayyenne looks like it might be a gonner :( I know it was some kind of hybrid cuz it had very thick skin and it was grown from seed of a thin skin....

But I am so happy the Hybris is alive and looking healthy and the Tabsco the same. Tabascos right away YIPPIE! Hybrids right away AWESOME!

So how is others Overwintering going?

Buncha hybrid (Habanero/Jalapeno) seed packs ready to go. I sent some out last week but they all came back. I think I packaged them all wrong or something.... Looking for crazy seeds

Doing great so far. Have 40 plants, 21 vareities, in one gallon containiers. Sixteen hours of light from two sets of shop lights, in a west facing window, temp averages in the 50's. Have had some leave drop, but might only lose a couple plants.

As for the war on aphids, I am winning by using the squish method as posted in another thread. It takes about an hour a week to check all the plants. First, I have two or more glasses of wine, wash my hands, put on the reading glasses, then mutate into the... "Aphid Assassin"

I too an fighting aphids, but only on my rocoto red for some reason.

Carmen, a bull's horn fryer, is producing better now than it did when outside :^)
The pods are smaller, but there's certainly more of them.

I overwinter under a 1kw sodium lamp so i prune back rather than have leaf drop.

How long ya think I should wait for the cayyanne to start showing life? All the other plants are regrowing leaves.

I got mine under 4 Flourecents. Same four that started them :) funny story aboot those lights too.

I too am OWing a few C. Chinese. Things are going OK so far, but I do see signs of white specks on many leaves. I'm thinking aphid skin shedding. NOT GOOD. Has anyone else experienced this? The leaves look like they have microscopic white specks maybe 1/16" long.

Then the good ole Fungas Knats too. The plants are putting on decent growth. I just keep them in front of a sunny window. I don't expect fruit as light levels are not intense enough. Just wanr them to survive for next season. We'll see.

Good luck WebofHair w/your OW adventure. This is my first year too. :)

Well it seems pretty official.... The cayenne is dead. Zero new life forming and the reamaing leaves look very sickly and the branches are yellowing.

    Crosses fingers for other plants!

I am fighting thrips. Cut everything back to no leaves on 11/26

Had a few aphids in October but squished them...no spider mites YET. Other than that the Habs and variegated Pequin are doing fine. The Habs seem to have issues with browing/dry leaf margins now with the dry heat indoors but all are getting a light shower when it's time to water. I don't quite understand that since our outdoor summers are hot and dry with very low humidity. No fancy light set up here (since I'm just wintering them) and have them placed in a west facing window with good light from 7:30 to 4pm.
Here's a pic of the Pequin....

That looks like a malamute taking up the whole couch

Caution this breed is known to steal chile peppers..

    web_of_hair,
Fear not, your cayenne may just be "resting" for a bit.
Many years ago, I had potted pepper plants on a window sill at my brownstone apartment...facing east. I thought the plants were all dead and proceeded to cover the windows and sill (containing the "dead" plants) with cardboard and duct tape.

I was attempting to keep the heat loss in my apartment to a minimum.

Well, after the cold months had passed...I removed the cardboard and to my surprise...the plants had started to sprout again!!

And they produced quite a yield of chiles that summer.

well warpath... I went on a war path (no pun intended really) and yanked it out of the dirt. It wasn't even taking in water as the branches were dry and brittle... Well at least the other plants have great new growth!
