This is a bicolored Salvia coccinea like Brenthurst. What other similar bicolored forms of coccinea are there, and what differentiates them?

Thanks Rich. Uh oh...from a quick google it's looking like coccinea is a tender perennial hardy only to Z8 if you're lucky? But self seeds. This seems to match what consensus was at the swap yesterday.

That's a pretty coccinea. You could bring the whole pot inside and hope it survives; take cuttings and try to grow inside thru' the winter; or collect seeds and hope they come true.

I am hoping my one and only Yvonne's will survive our mild winters, but just in case I'm doing the last two.

Yvonne's splendens volunteered for me this year in North Carolina.

Yvonne's had several volunteers in my garden too. These eventually grew to about 5 feet, as big those started from seed in the spring. For the first time since I've grown it macrophylla volunteered. It eventually bloomed but about a month later than those started indoors.

i agree with the others that this looks like a coccinea, probably Brenthurst.

these plants make lots of seed that is easy to collect. if you want to ensure that seeds make it over the winter, collect some and store in a paper envelope.

dragging a pot inside over the winter isn't worth the effort. they are whitefly magnets when grown indoors under lights. plus, the plants grow rapidly from seed.
