What can grow under an avacado tree??

Hello! I have a huge 50 year old avacado tree that drops leaves all year long and keeps a large patch of my yard in total shade. I am looking for some shrubs and ground cover that is kid freindly and tolerant. Does anyone have any suggestions??? Thank you!
