Tomatoes and peppers will not be happy and you will not be happy with the results. You could grow leaf crops (lettuce, spinach and the like) and the herbs which prefer their sun less intense, such as mint and anise hyssop. Chives would do alright also.

Depends on how much sun this area actually receives. I grow tomatoes in containers on my east facing patio, which receives sun in summer until early afternoon when it is screened by the house and large trees in my backyard. The tomatoes do great. If you are getting at least 6 hours of unobstructed sunlight (eg. from daybreak until midday), that is sufficient for sun loving veggies.

do you think i can grow lettuce and spinach in Texas a bit later than the usual season if i keep them out of the afternoon sun--i thought about doing them in containers and the spot has no sun past 1pm, but has it all morning till then. i wondered if they would be less likely to bolt if they did not get so hot.

I don't kmow about veggies, but you can try some herbs.
I have mint and lemon balm under a peach tree. They don't get much sun and they are doing fine. I also have oregano in partial shade. You just need to make sure they have nice soil and enough water.

Skinny, somehow I doubt it, but you should probably check with the Texas forum (there is one, isn't there?) to get people with hands-on experience in your area.

I live in Texas, and my shaded raised beds do OK after it gets real hot (May-June). I grow FALL tomatoes that last until freezing temps.
