If your question is about cost, then yes you can buy bulbs in the fall cheaply. Brentandbeckys.com has them for $2/bulb in bulk. They are sold out now though. It will take a season or two to establish and fill in.

Or check around for a plant swap in your area. We had quite a lot of lily of the valley at ours last weekend. Lily of the valley has to be happy in order to get the effect you're looking for. And it takes a while. You may want to start some fast-growing hostas in the shade to get more coverage.

Stuff is very invasive. I rip 100 plants out a year and toss them and still have some to share.

they grow by spreading rhizomes or 'pips' not bulbs... their growing habit is more like Pachysandra than tulips.

and the best way is as described- find someone whose got a bed of them that's invading their lawn, and offer to 'groom' it for the culls. you will find yourself with enough to seed your bed with for sure :)
