I'm jealous of your hosta. I cannot seem to get them to grow to any size at all and always battle the slugs. Here's my garden; fuchsia is the largest plant. It may not look shady as it gets some early morning sun, but it's shady or dappled most of the day.

Maybe in california hostas are just harder to grow. I think NJ is sort of "hosta country" :)

My perennials instructor told us to take our flower pictures on cloudy days whenever we could. The colors show better. A shade garden is a cloudy day!
