Gardening in Shade

I would like to plant fast growing shrubs that are not deciduous, in planter boxes against a wall. There is 16 in. from front to wall and 5 ft. long. The area is light but no direct sunlight because it is facing north. Is English Laurel a good idea?

Not in a planter box!! English laurel grows HUGE -- and rather rapidly at that. I'd consider dwarf sarcococca or perhaps even boxwood or a smaller Japanese holly. There are also some dwarf pieris that would work -- 'Little Heath' comes to mind.
