I wouldn't bet the farm on that article. It has more holes in it than fact. The writer is obviously biased, and plucked the pieces from the study that supported their position. Glancing over the fact that the author of the study states that it's not really fair to compare when testing methods have changed in the past 40 years to the point that they aren't even recognizable. To be valid and make a point, testing methods on todays veggies should have been the same as those 40 years ago.

    Pffft.

That Yahoo arty must have been written by a flunky in a PR dept of big Ag. Weak.

It is true that industrial agriculture has produced food that contains lesser amounts of some nutrients, but it is not true that organic produce is lower in nutrients, which is the weak, unsupported conclusion from the Yahoo article, and nowhere in the original does it state such.

There are numerous such articles promulgated by Big Ag to marginalize organic, which was a rapidly growing market share, as people want something that tastes good and is grown with care - which Big Ag produce isn't - so Big Ag needs to hide these facts. What better way to do it than propaganda?

Ok, I'll admit I quickly read the article but I'm missing what you're talking about Dan...

"If you're still not buying the whole "organic-is-better" argument, this study might convince you otherwise"

I take this to mean they're saying organic IS better.

Huh. I can see it your way too now that you mention it greenbean. The sentence is poor as it doesn't tie in well to the previous para or relate the subject to the paper results.

Hmmm....maybe coffee intake amount is OK and I need to stop writing for a while (or get a new Editor)...

    :o(

    Now I need a drink! ;o)

I'm not sure I trust my own opinions today anyway, I spent the afternoon doing taxes... I got all psyched thinking we were getting a refund only to find out we owe more than that to the state...

My brain is tired. I haven't done my own taxes for such a long time. They were easier back then...

I too read the article quickly, with Liisa's comments in mind. I thought it said go organic and grow your own.

And frankly that doesn't surprise me. The tomatoes I get on my burgers and sandwiches have no taste whatsoever. They can't be "good" for you. /sigh

This has nothing do with nutrients in the tomatoes. The problem is that they are picked weeks before optimum, "ripened" with ethylene gas, and shipped 1000s of miles to a destination. 9 times out of 10, you are eating a tomato that is at least 3-4 weeks from being ripe if it were still on vine, but has been off the vine for over a month, and in cold storage for all that time. Nothing is going to taste good after being subject to that.

This is common practice with all fruits. Oranges aren't that bright orange color when they are picked, about the only fruit that they can't do something with is grapes as far as I know. I worked in purchasing for a grocery store produce department, and some of the things they do are amazing.

jleiwig - you're right....I used to be an ammonia refrigeration service technician, and would frequently perform service in food distribution centers for Albertson's, Dot, Pya Monarch, and many more....Anyway, they all have a "banana cooler", that they ripen the bananas in....very interesting stuff....

Steven Pinker was on Daily Show the other evening (IIRC) and he was talking about getting his DNA sequenced and put The Internets.

Anyway, I should have that done, as I'm certain I have the gene that knee-jerks at any opportunity to bash Big Ag, and you guys could look at my genome and predict how I'll (over)react to something... ;o)

Back OT to the off-topic, I doubt that when we calculate "food miles" that we count the carbon footprint of ethylene chambers or maintenance thereof...
