Two cantaloupe by themselves, will completely engulf that trellis....

The two cukes will take up a good amount of that trellis as well. I have a 4' 8" wide trellis that is getting one cantaloupe this year, and an early season pea that I expect to be swallowed by the melon in August-ish.

I am planning on three cantaloupe in a SWC, next to two tomatoes in another SWC as an experiment. It had better work because I have no where else to put anything. Hehe. Of course, if you have space, give plants all they can handle. If not, you're SFGardening.

I know conditions vary, but giving a rough estimate, how many cantaloupes would a person get from one plant?

EG, I've seen your pictures and wondered how many cantaloupes you were growing to have them fill up the trellis. Based on your advice to me, is it 2?

snowmanaxp - that picture shows 2 cantaloupe on that side. They really take up alot of space...I plan on letting only about 4 fruit on each vine develop, and the rest will be pinched off. Allowing the vines to run wild like last year caused too much energy to be placed into the vine development, and not enough for the fruit. Although I did get a couple of big ones, the rest were very small.

I'm considering planting some melons in my SFG this year, as well. Last season I managed four cucumber plants in two squares with no problem. (But then we had a poor spring for curcubits and a massive hailstorm, so they didn't take over.)

EG gets at the bonus - in a SFG and trellised, you can control melon growth so the vines don't go hog wild everywhere.

This "sweet" chinese open pollinated long cucumber is quick to set fruit (plan a 2nd summer planting) & ripen, so you'll be eating them while just starting to fret about melons :

Thanks for all of your ideas. For this year I think I am going to stick with just cucumbers.
I have devoted a lot of space this year to trying new cherry tomato varieties. So next year I may have more room to do the melons.
