Square Foot Gardening

newbie questions for 7b SFQ

Hi,

We are trying to build 3 4X4 boxes, 10 inches deep this weekend. I'm thinking based on the materials I am finding locally that it will be less than 1/4 vermiculite, less than 1/4 peat moss (coco peat?) and 50% compost. Does that sound ok for Birmingham, AL?

This is my current plan, but I am concerned about the trellised plants on the west. DH would prefer to leave them there for aesthetics, but I am wondering if we should turn them 90 degrees and have trellis plant on the north sides.

The actual plant locations are still up in the air as I haven't investigate companions and interplanting just yet.

In 7b is it too warm for carrots, cauli/broccoli, peas?

I'd like to set out seeds tomorrow. All input appreciated!

If the trellis is the tallest thing in your garden, it should be north so it doesn't shade the other plants. Carrots should be okay, but it may be a little late for broccoli and cauliflower.

Thank you. Technically the hedge it taller (6'), but it is fairly open and about 5 ft west of the beds.

Anyone local have some input about what to plant now? There are broccoli and cauli seedlings in our garden centers, but perhaps I should wait for fall.

Also, I can't find a solid date to count from. Mel suggests 4 weeks before the frost date, 2 weeks after, etc. I have been told everything from mid-March to mid-April. That's quite a large span of time.
