Does your county have a local compost facility? Most counties do - where there is curbside pickup of yard waste - or even designated days that towns allow you to bring your yard waste to them.

The local compost facility usually gives away the compost for nearly nothing - or even free. This is what I've used to fully fill all of my beds and it has worked well.

The crazy thing is that aren't ANY local compost facilities even remotely close to me. I have called every possible outlet you can think of. The guy in charge of our Purdue extension office only suggests manure (because it is all you can get). I've even called a couple local food co-ops, but no one is willing to sell me any of the compost they use. I am starting to compost myself this year, but obviously don't have any to fill with before the start of the season.
The best I have been able to do is a truck load of composted manure and mushroom. I am going to get some coffee grounds from Starbucks to add a bit of nitrogen. I am just hoping and praying that this will be good enough?!

I'm sure it will be fine as long as it's well aged and thoroughly composted. It should be ph neutral that would tell you if it's been well composted.
