If you can't avoid planting taller plants where it might shade others, plant things that won't mind a bit of shade such as the lettuce, radishes, some herbs. Squash will sprawl unless you are diligent about trellising (same with tomatoes). The first year, my tomatoes broke all of my woefully built trellises. Eggplant like warmth and they can be touchy about being disturbed so don't underplant with things like beets or radishes.

You can also think about succession planting such as following the peas with beans.

is there a specific squash variety that you would trellis (what i seem to run across in the stores are either specific 'bush varierty' or not mentioned)

also - after the peas, do you mean bush beans?

I would assume the intent was pole beans after the peas, as both will climb effortlessly. There is no "bush" pea variety that I am aware of, so using a climbing variety of beans would make the most sense to me as they could use the same trellis.

Thank you for the advice! I will have to work on the trellis to make sure it can handle a heavier crop, though it being my first time gardening as an adult.

I feel that the placement will be alot of trial and error, but eventually we will get it right.
