Becca, looks good! And brings back memories. My garden began life as a square-footer 20 years ago, but after a couple seasons I realized some things just needed more room.

Squash takes up a lot of room. Are you in the south? I'd suggest bush beans, but it's getting a little late for that. How about more herbs? Are you planning to plant a fall garden?

I have four 4x4 beds and two 4x5. Two beds are dedicated to herbs and flowers. In one 4x4 I have 5 tomato plants and 4 peppers. In one 4x5 I have 6 tomatoes and 2 peppers. In the other 4x5 I have 7 tomatoes and a patch of Swiss chard. Even though I planted less than in previous years it's starting to look like a jungle out there. I do some sucker pinching and keep the lowest branches clipped off to help with air circulation.

I'll never forget my very first 4' x 4' raised SFG - how I oh-so-carefully used string to map out those squares and then put in all those tiny plants & seeds.

By the last week of June I began referring to it as "The Jungle".

I absolutely recall my frantic attempts to corral those out-of-control tomatoes - they just wouldn't stop! Tying them up was practically a fulltime job. Not to mention the cukes at the back of the box...and the 2 zucchini...and the bell peppers that became so loaded down with fruit I had to use 4 stakes each just to keep'em upright.

It was kind of a pain, but I still consider it a resounding success in terms of learning and production. I love SFG and would never go back to rows.
