That was really fun to watch, and your garden is beautiful! I'm looking forward to seeing your time lapse videos - I may try the same thing with the squash and melon plants I have that are just forming their true leaves!

Thanks Indy! I haven't done one with the planters yet (I need to sort through the mountain of photos), but here's one of our peas. I missed a day or two in between, but tried to take photos every day since the first one popped out of the mix.

Hehe, I wasn't trying to dishearten you, just comiserate. In fact I am thinking of my garden is half the cost it took to build it now that I'm spreading the cost over 2 years. In a decade it will be basically free.

I haven't had the courage to go through the pile of receipts yet. I'll try to add up the mix portion from memory -

1) Peat moss - 3 bales - $30
2) Vermiculite - 4 four cubic foot bags - $60
3) Bought compost - maybe 21-22 bags - just a guess $75
4) DIY compost - free!

That comes to about $165 for four boxes. It was actually a little less than that as I had some mix left over. I also had quite a bit of blended compost left over.

So you're looking at roughly $40 to fill a standard 4x4 planter. Not too shabby, IMHO.
