Most sites that I have searched say that you have to grow asparagus seedlings for the first year in one bed, and then dig and replant the crowns into a different permanent bed the next spring. I really don't want to do that. Is it possible to direct sow asparagus seeds into a 4x4 SFG and then just leave them there to grow for the required three years to harvest? Would it work if I were to sow them in a six inch box for the first year and then add a second story box and fill in as the shoots come up in the second year?
