1st Season SFGardener - Plan Evaluation

So I have prepared my 5 beds with Mel's Mix. 3 beds are 4x4x7". One bed is 4x4x14" and the other bed is 1x7x7"

I'm growing in SWFL. Any and all advice would be helpful.

You will notice one of my beds is entirely empty. I don't really know what to plant there as I feel that I have a lot of things already planned. If anyone has any suggestions of things that grow fairly simply I would appreciate it.

My intention is to start Tomatoes and Peppers inside soon, then I will plant the rest directly and attempt to space planting so I can yield the most over the longest period of time.

Thanks in advance.

Wow, I wish I had that much space to garden in. Everything looks great, the only thing I might recommend is to grow more of certain things that you only have 1 or 2 boxes reserved for, like cucumbers or peppers. I have in my garden 6 squares each dedicated to cucumbers and peppers, and I'm not finding the harvest large enough for 2 adults. It also depends on what you like. You might also want to try carrots, or perhaps potatoes if you can get the soil deep enough?

I noticed you have basil. Have you thought about flat-leaf parsley or thyme? Garlic or onions could fill in the spaces. Cool season crops like broccoli and bok choy could grow in the fall.

Here is a link that might be useful: What's Growing On?

Thank you all for your followups... I'm really looking forward to the first season. Moiraine I may just take your advice there. Especially since you mentioned not having enough for 2 adults that's what we are as well.

Lgteacher I have both Parsley (top left) and Thyme (bottom right) in my herb bed of the garden. I thought about some kind of seasonal crops. As well as Garlic, Onions & Potatoes.

How deep does the soil need to be for Potatoes?

I would increase your squares of beans and peas...from experience. I have 16 wafted of pole beans and 16 sqft of bush beans for two adults and one child. I only have 6 sqft of peas and its nooooo where near enough. Only a few are large enough at a time to harvest so it takes a lot of plants to get enough for meals. I have a black beauty eggplants thathas taken about 8 sqft over so watch the spacing on those. I've gotten about 8 off the plant already with another 10 or so still growing. What about radishes and scallions? Is do more carrots but my 3 yr old loves them. With strawberries you will run into the same problem as beans, only a few ready at a time. I have 12 ever bearing plants, 6 alpines and probably 30 June bearers and never manage more than 5 berries ripe in a day. They just don't all come ready at the same time. You need quantity with strawberries AND room for runners at the end of the season.

One thing I see is what Mindy pointed out. Just a few strawberries right there won't produce like you might think it will. I have an entire 4'x8' bed dedicated to strawberries and would really like to have another one. But that is for 2 adults and some neighbors whenever I feel like earning brownie points.

But at the end of the day, it's your garden. Try it however you like this year, and if you find something you don't like, change it next year.
