Though it certainly wouldn't hurt to check your loaded trellis for potential failure points it doesn't mean everybody should run out to the garden and change their twine. Twine failure is dependent on many factors such as load, wind, overhead vs. ground watering, summer precipitation, general humidity and probably a few others I've not thought of. If you live in a dry summer and fairly dry winter climate like mine (Reno, NV), hemp or jute twine can last up to two seasons, even with a relatively heavy load. I've never had any twine break during the growing season.

It's a good idea to check. With all the excessive moisture we have had in the Northeast this season, I have also noticed that the twine I used earlier this season is brittle and rotted. Usually it lasts the full season without a problem.

The really good thing about this is the jute can be composted. Just put up new twine($3 from Lowes). You don't need to worry about the Estrogens the nylon/plastic put in your food.

Do you really think you can get estrogens from nylon netting? Bring it on, since I am at the age where a bit extra couldn't hurt.

I find in our wet weather, I can get a season out of my jute twine, but it composts well, so I just re-string every year. I have actually given up on it and use other methods in some places, but still use it for a pea trellis.
