Your picture looks like bird or insect damage to me.

Try going to the thread on this same page entitled Tomato Problem solver 2 and check out the links there to see if you can find pictures of similar damage. Or you could post more pictures.

Thanks cbars! I looked thru a bunch of posts to try and find an answer prior to posting but missed that one somehow. From what I see here I think it may be one of these two, Alternaria canker or Bacterial canker.

Your first post only talked about problems on the fruit. What do your plants look like? Are you seeing yellow, brown dieing leaves? Lesions and spots on leaves? Wilting of leaves or whole branches?

You get the idea - give us more info.

As an alternative, start spraying with daconil - Ortho Garden Disease Control. Follow directions and this fungicide should help.

Well I found the problem. This a.m. when I sat at my desk I noticed the there were "grounds" around the tomato I pictured above which I left sitting on the desk since taking the photo. After disecting the tomato I found the caterpillar/worm pictured in the the photo in follow up post titled "Worm?" since I can not post another image to this post. I had disected two other tomatoes with similar damge and found nothing before my original post. Also, there were several scars on this tomato which did not penetrate very far like this burrow with the worm. Do they do this, start to dig in then back out to start in another spot? Or maybe those worms never got in before birds or lizards got them? Thanks for any further info on what this is and if opinion is that it caused all of the fruit damage I have shown in the original picture! In reply to Gary the are a few leave that had yellowed and browned dying off but not what I would feel is problematic? I had not watered a couple times and allowed the plants to get pretty dry which is what I suspected was the cause of that minimal leaf damage.

Chris, I named the "worm" as a tomato fruitworm. They can strike on any part of the fruit, but they really prefer just at the stem... the picture you posted still looks a bit like bird damage to me.
