I had a "bug" bore a hole in a stem, and leave a pile something like that.

Looks like mealybugs. Are you growing it in a greenhouse? I'm not really that familiar with the bugs you've got in Alberta though.

Yes, I am growing in a geenhouse. I have the eggs and leaf in a plastic baggy to see if something comes out of it.

Cottony stuff-not necessarily eggs. Agree with Treefrog--if you could probe it apart and then look through a handlens you may see mealybugs and eggs and nymphs. And there are other insects that produce waxy substance that looks cottony too.

It's a mealy bug. They are a pain and will kill the tops of the plants if you leave them there. If you don't have many plants you can kill them with alcohol. If you have a lot of plants like I do it takes chemicals to get through that mess that surrounds them.

You can shake the vines a it sometimes will run them off but they will return.
