This was the first year for our vegetable garden. We converted a 20 x 80 area of old field to a garden. I know I should have got the soil tested before planting but I went ahead and added 5 pickup truck loads of manure, a lot of partially rotted woodchips, a small amount of chemical fertilizer and figured something would grow. The squash did fairly well but the tomatoes didn't do much. They basically stayed small and didn't grow up like I'm used to in the other gardens that I've had in the past. I'm wondering if the PH imbalance that I guess that I have is causing this problem. We've got some tomatoes but they have been small and take a long time to ripen, and don't taste like the ones that I'm used to out of my previous gardens. The watering has been fairly regular (no blossom end rot). BTW..I planted Brandywines and some Roma hybrids. Any ideas?
