That's exactly what it sounds like. Voles love to munch on hostas. I can't stand the little vandals.

Yes, definitely voles. I don't do hostas, but my Mom loves them and has lost more than she can begin to count to voles. She has finally given up the fight and started doing ferns this year. :)

My kitty takes care of the little varmints! He brought me one the other day.

Yep, that sounds like voles, and their favorite snack is hostas! There are lots of interesting ideas on the "hostas forum" and also on the "pests forum" about how to deal with voles. Like Rebecca, we have "security cats" who patrol the yard--and that helps a lot!
