IF the area is *contained*, you might try variegated bishop's weed (Aegopodium -- it's also got other common names). It is short, attractive, and difficult to kill, but it CAN be invasive. You might also try perennial vinca (Vinca minor). It won't bloom much in dry shade, but it also is difficult to kill and its leaves make a nice green carpet. Or if the ground is just a bit damp, hostas might do well.

Marty gave us a list at the plant swap and the only thing I see on it that fits the requirement is Low St Andrews Cross (hypericum stragulum) 6" blue-green foliage, yellow summer blooms. Hope this helps....

Strawberry begionia works for me in dry shade. So does asarum, and it has the advantage of being beautiful and spreading slowly. Lamium has been great for me in dry shade in clay that bakes to brick. I also have good results with iris cristata.
