Feeding your children

Last year as we were sitting at the table for some BLT's with home grown tomatoes, I looked at my wife and said, "It really is a good feeling to feed our child with food that I grew myself."

She replied, "Yeah... I breastfed."

    :-D

Since I both breastfeed and garden I get both points.

Being able to provide for one's family and friends by the word of one's own hands in one's own soil is a source of profound joy and satisfaction.

    Love it.

I'm finding much satisfaction with getting the little people in my life interested in gardening - as well as feeding them from the garden.

It's satisfying all around... I find much satisfaction in having get togethers with bread salad, pizza, salsa, etc. all made with tomatoes from my garden (which if your reading this you KNOW homegrown can't compare to the painted rocks you buy).

    It's very satisfying.

    I hear you tom8olvr.

My 4-yr-old daughter has shown an interest in my garden. Well, for a few minutes at a time anyway. After a few minutes out there, she usually retreats to her swing set. I hope that her interest will be better held once we have actual plants in the ground and we're doing something other than spreading mulch or pulling weeds trying to get the beds ready.

This year, I think I'm going to put her in charge of a plant. It will be a hybrid roma grown in a five gallon bucket. I chose this one because I had the seeds, it is a small plant and it did fairly well last year when in the ground.

I've planted in this home made, self watering container for the past two years and have yet to see a tomato from a container plant. I get lots of leaves and blooms, but no fruit. I've tried Black Krim one year because I heard they did well in containers and NAR because I had it left over last year. I hope we get fruit from it as to not discourage her. Next year, I hope to have her start her own plants from seed and see the process the whole way through. I know that nothing would excite her more than knowing she grew dinner for us.

The kidlings in my life really like cherry tomatoes. I know, I know, not my favorite either, but they really like being able to grab a tomato and eat it on the spot I have not had the kidlings weed or spreading mulch or anything too difficult Im wanting it to be a positive experience Which is why I really liked the idea of a tomato maze. Fun, food (good food), gardening! What could be better?! :) Although, I think kidlings (and doglings, yes the dogs want in on the action too) want to spend time with you regardless of where you are or what your doing... (coming from someone who hasn't gone to the bathroom without interuption for 14 years!)...
Long story short: try a cherry tomato - sungold is early, tasty and sweet - perfect for a kidling!

archeb you need to fertilize container tomatoes. I would fertilize once a week with 1/4 strength general purpose soluble fertilizer. Roma is the worst choice for a container as they tend to get BER. I agree a cherry, grape or pear tomato would be a good choice but they will need to be staked or trellised. The soil also has to be light and arid.
