Wow, how neat. It reminds me of one of those long-reach cement pumping trunks. I don't know much of anything about moths, but if no one here knows, try The Butterfly Garden Forum. There are people there that could tell you immediately upon seeing the picture.

I did some hunting on the web and found out what it was,a tomato hornworm moth.

You had some replies over on the BG forum too. Yes, it is a five-spotted hawkmoth. For once, something beside the abundantly common six-spotted hawkmoth! Yes, they are aptly named. Just like a hummingbird, sphinx moths hover while feeding, rather than lighting as do noctuid moths and butterflies. Some regions refer to these as "hummingbird moths" for that very reason.

By the way, since all I ever get are TOBACCO hornworms [a related but different species] I'm sure this nectaring moth may have left some treasures behind, on the Datura, which also feeds her larvae. The explanation of the sybiosis is on the BG forum, too. I just want some seedstock for rearing locally, since I am, after all, "Tomato Worm."

What is this moth on my surprise lily aka naked lady.

Pat, that is a type of "humming bird moth". I had one just like this on my flowers this summer. Their are several species of this moth.
