Can''t see the whole kitchen but I certainly would explore painting them. This is a heavily grained oak so I would have all major flat surfaces skim coated to lessen the grain before painting. it also takes a great deal of cleaning and sanding to prep for painting.

Your cabinet doors are pretty large and boring, to break it up, I would attach bead-board paneling on the faces and paint them. (Liquid nails to attach the panels and a little painters caulk to blend the edge of the panel into the existing bevel of the door.) For a little more money, a small molding right at the edge of the bevel would look nice and give it more dimension. Not sure how many cabinets you need to do, but Lowes has 4X8 bead-board panels $20.
I would paint them a nice green (I'm picturing something like Benjamin Moore's Hancock Green in their Heritage color collection.) http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/hancockgreen
That green will look nice with the yellow tile and accents. I also think you have a blank slate above your hood, a wood decorative scroll (Onlay) or even a large calligraphy word (i.e. Last name or "Welcome" "Enjoy" "Bon Appetite" whatever...)
If you are are able to take down your hood, an old table cloth in the back yard and can of spray paint will make it look brand new. Silver leaf is another idea for the hood. Then of coarse new hardware.
But don't mix metals in such a small kitchen... faucet, cabinet pulls, and hood should all be in the same family.
