There are different types of Amaryllis, but most if not all should probably be brought inside here. If you had a warm microclimate (next to a brick wall, etc), some established amaryllis, planted in very well draining soil and mulched well, might survive outside here.

My wording above is not good. I should have just said that some Amaryllis cultivars might be hardier than others.

I think Norris would be around zone 7a. Most Amaryllis are hardy to around zones 8 (with protection) or 9.

OK, this is getting to the obsessive compulsive stage, but....

Hippeastrums, Amaryllis belladonna, and occasionally members of other genera, are sold as Amaryllis. Most Hippeastrums (most common plant sold as Amaryllis) are hardy to around zones 8 (with protection) or 9. Amaryllis belladonna (the real Amaryllis) is hardy to around zone 7. Others would have to be identified to give a hardiness zone rating.

A lot of people are having success in TN with amaryllis these days. It's still a bit iffy, though, so I would recommend planting half outside and half in pots that you can keep inside. And plant the outside ones deep to give them an extra bit of protection.

Hmmm.....come to think of it, I'd probably plant them ALL in pots for this winter. Then plant half of them outside in the spring, so that they'll have a good long time to establish themselves before it gets cold again. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I grow several (don't know the names, besides Ackermann) that do very well and bloom every year here in Knoxville with no mulch. I would wait until spring to plant them so that they have a chance to establish during the season.
