I have a large two-story open concept living room. Our style is kind of a modern traditional. We actually have pretty limited furniture, a small couch, and black low, horizontal media center. Most of our living room space is taken up with tall Room & Board modern bookshelves, as here: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=3163. Because we have so many books, there is lots of color in the room. And everything is very vertical.

I desperately need a coffee table that I can eat off of, and I really don't want glass. I was thinking about a couple of poufs but can't find one that a plate of food would balance on, and I'm thinking they would probably be lost in the room.

Does anyone have some favorite products they can suggest? I loved the River Rock coffee table floating around here, but it is lacquer, and that will get beaten up too much in our house (two spazzy dogs).
