Norm, that's a shame. Do you know what kind of oaks they were? There's a fungal disease called Oak Wilt that takes trees out fast -- the leaves wilt all over the tree, and death follows within a matter of weeks. Another disease, Oak Decline, is slower. Usually you'll see dying branches from the top of the tree down over a period of 3-5 years. Eventually the whole tree goes. Red Oak types (Scarlet, Red, Black, Shumard, Nuttall, Blackjack, Spanish, etc) are more susceptible than White Oak types (White, Post, Chestnut, etc). But they all can get sick.

By the way, that Cherokee Purple tomato plant you gave me at the spring swap is still cranking out fabulous maters.

Don't know what type of Oaks they are but was wiped out
in a few days. My tomatoes look like the Oaks. No tomatoes
for several weeks now.
